General Info on Gymnastics
Gymnastic exercises, sometimes called grids, are a series of poles or jumps set in a pattern of related distances, often in a straight line. They are excellent educational tools for both riders and horses to improve their technique and build confidence.
Clinic Format
This clinic will be done in groups of 2 to 3 riders. Each session will be 50 minutes long, with 10 minute breaks between sessions. Levels start from cross-rails, up to 2’6”+.
About the Clinician
Laurie May Canty grew up riding in Southern California and traveled to Europe where she received her Instructor Certificate from the British Horse Society in 1970 after studying at the famed Burton Hall Equitation School in Ireland. She competed multiple horses at the highest levels offered at west coast eventing venues as the sport was developing in the region, and has been a longtime advocate in the retraining of off-the-track thoroughbreds (OTTBs). A true “trainer’s trainer” – she has coached and mentored many trainers in Southern California and beyond.
Preparation & Performance
Prepare for this clinic as you would for a horse show. Clinics are educational experiences, with no ribbons or prizes; the clinician’s instruction is always the true prize. Turnout should include helmet, collared shirt with sleeves, tucked in with belt, conservative colored clothing and tack, horse groomed and tack cleaned thoroughly. Impact vests are encouraged but not required. Supporters and auditors are welcome. Please warm your horse up with a 10-15 minute walk before your clinic start time.
